Regulations of the Research Centre for Language Documentation

§ 1

  1. The Research Centre for Language Documentation, hereinafter referred to as the “Centre”, is an organizational unit of the Institute of Linguistics and Translation Studies in the Faculty of Philology of the Jagiellonian University.
  2. The resort (Pol. Ośrodek Dokumentacji Językowej) may use the following name in English: Research Centre for Language Documentation.

§ 2

  1. The purpose of the Centre’s activities is to cooperate with academic and cultural institutions both in Poland and abroad, including non-governmental organizations, as well as with scholars dealing with linguistic and historical-linguistic documentation of languages, and also to coordinate cooperation in this field within the framework of the Institute of Linguistics and Translation Studies in the Faculty of Philology of the Jagiellonian University.
  2. The tasks of the Centre include in particular:
    • creating a support platform for implementing the following research project: (Re)constructing a Bible. A new approach to unedited Biblical manuscripts as sources for the early history of the Karaim language, acronym: KaraimBible (grant agreement number: 802645-ERC-2018-STG), as part of the European Research Council grant awarded for the period from February 1, 2019 to January 31, 2024, with the option of extending the grant subject to the consent of the European Research Council; 
    • conducting research on the linguistic and historical-linguistic documentation of languages, dialects and subdialects, with a particular emphasis on languages, dialects and subdialects that are endangered, in the process of becoming extinct or which are already extinct;
    • conducting research on the protection and revitalization of languages, dialects and subdialects that are endangered or are in the process of becoming extinct;
    • establishing and maintaining contacts with the institutions and persons referred to in para. 1;
    • engaging in educational and extra-curricular activities, in particular workshops, courses, etc., directed at employees and students of the Jagiellonian University, as well as activities accessible to a wide range of recipients;
    • organizing seminars, academic conferences, summer schools and workshops, as well as supporting the participation of researchers associated with the Centre's activities in the above-mentioned initiatives;
    • disseminating and popularizing knowledge on language documentation by building an academically and socially active environment centred around this issue;
    • preparing research projects in the fields of historical and documentary linguistics.

§ 3

  1. The Director of the Centre may be an academic teacher employed in the Institute of Linguistics and Translation Studies at the Faculty of Philology of the Jagiellonian University, for whom the Jagiellonian University constitutes his or her place of primary employment, and who holds at least a doctoral degree in the humanities with a specialization in linguistics, subject to § 111 of the Statute of the Jagiellonian University. 
  2. The Director of the Centre is appointed for a fixed term no longer than five years by the Rector of the Jagiellonian University following a proposal submitted by the Dean of the Faculty of Philology of the Jagiellonian University, following approval by the Council of the Institute of Linguistics and Translation Studies.

§ 4

  1. For the duration of the KaraimBible grant of the European Research Council, the tasks set out in § 2 para. 2 point. 1, to the extent they are directly related to, and necessary for, the implementation of the above-mentioned project, will be financed from the funds obtained within the framework of this grant as well as from the funds of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education received under the Premia na horyzoncie programme (Ministry of Science and Higher Education Decision No. 418302/PnH/2018).
  2. Activities of the Centre referred to in § 2 para. 2 point 1 indirectly related to the implementation of tasks arising from the KaraimBible project are financed out of the indirect costs of the KaraimBible grant of the European Research Council.
  3. The Centre’s activities may also be financed from:
    • the budget of the Institute of Linguistics and Translation Studies in the Faculty of Philology of the Jagiellonian University;
    • grants financed from both domestic and international sources;
    • funds received within the framework of cooperation with external entities;
    • other sources connected with the Centre’s activities.

§ 5

  1. The property of the Centre constitutes a separate part of the property of the Jagiellonian University and is managed in accordance with the rules in force in the Jagiellonian University.
  2. Intellectual and industrial property created as a result of the Centre’s activities will be managed in accordance with the principles of intellectual property and the legal protection of intellectual goods in force in the Jagiellonian University and in accordance with the guidelines of the European Research Council Executive Agency (ERCEA)
