Research assistant in the ERC project KaraimBIBLE

General information

The Jagiellonian University in Kraków invites applicants for two assistant researcher positions in the project entitled (Re)constructing a Bible. A new approach to unedited Biblical manuscripts as sources for the early history of the Karaim language (Acronym: KaraimBIBLE), founded by the European Research Council (ERC).

Applicants must fulfil de requirements stated in Articles 113 and 116.2.4 of the Polish Act on Higher Education of 20 July 2018 as well as in § 166 of the Statute of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, as well as the following additional requirements:

  1. holding the academic degree of M.A. (pol. magister) or the academic degree of Ph.D. (pol. doktor),
  2. provide positive opinion of the head of department/chair or academic tutor on candidate’s suitability work in the post of academic teacher,
  3. a good command of Russian and English.

The research group is seeking candidates for a position for 18 months with a possible extension until 31.01.2024. The Jagiellonian University in Kraków does not provide housing.

KaraimBIBLE is a research project financed by the European Research Council (ERC) the basis of which will be a comprehensive edition of the entire Karaim Bible based on carefully selected sources from the 15th–20th centuries. The sources will receive grammatical and palaeographical descriptions. To achieve the research objectives the research team will create an on-line digital critical edition – equipped with a lexicographical database. The platform will be a complex research instrument providing a highly interconnected network of data based on the technologies commonly referred to as Semantic Web. The project will be conducted in close collaboration with the Uppsala University (Sweden).

Responsibility

Conducting field research; organizing and carrying out (incl. technical support) speech recordings of Kraim speakers; preliminary assessment of the linguistic competence of language informants; organizing the schedule of meetings with language informants (establishing contact, exchanging correspondence); obtaining permissions for the recordings and their subsequent use for the purposes of research or teaching; preparing the language informants’ biographic notes; processing the recorded language material (audio processing, cataloguing); participating in meetings; disseminating the research results.

Expectations

Master’s or PhD dissertation in Oriental Philology, good command of Russian and English, experience in field research, including speech recordings; documented collaboration with the Karaim community in Lithuania and Poland; technical competence in using speech recording equipment; good language competence in Russian and English.

Competition start date: 25/06/2020.

Deadline for submitting applications expires on: 25/07/2020.

The decision regarding competition settlement shall be made not later than 6 months after the competition commencement date.
